Biography

Dr. Jia Cui received his Ph.D. degree from the School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, under the supervision of Professor Mingxi Tang between 2010 and 2015, with a research focus on Design Technology. After graduation, he joined the School of Information Science and Engineering at Shandong Normal University as a faculty member. In 2022, he joined the School of Design, South China University of Technology.

He has published more than 40 academic papers, including over 20 SCI/EI-indexed articles. As a principal investigator, he has led projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, the Provincial Higher Education Science and Technology Program, and the Central Universities Basic Research Program. As a sub-project leader, he has participated in projects supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (UGC) and the UNESCO Silk Road Interactive Map (Silkroad Atlas). He has also participated in multiple NSFC and provincial-level projects and has undertaken several industry–university collaborative projects with enterprises such as Huawei and Hisense.


Research Interests

With a dual background in computer science and design, Dr. Cui’s expertise spans across artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, and intelligent design technologies. He has over 15 years of experience in CAD development and ACIS kernel programming. His main research areas include:

  • Intelligent Design: Applications of deep learning and machine learning algorithms in design, AIGC (AI-generated content), and parametric design.

  • Interaction Design: Human–computer interaction based on devices such as Kinect, MYO, and HTC VIVE.

  • Derivation Design: Pattern inference and derivation based on ethnic styles.

  • Design Intention and Evaluation: Studies on the generation and evolution of design thinking, design feature representation, and design aesthetic evaluation.

  • Interdisciplinary Research: Integration of computer vision and design studies.
